AI Agents

The IX-API MCP Server connects an AI agent to an internet exchange. An exchange runs one next to its IX-API implementation, and you point your agent at it. Once you sign in, the agent gets that exchange’s documentation and access to the API as you.

MCP is the Model Context Protocol, the way agents such as Claude reach outside services. This server speaks it over HTTP, so any MCP client can use it.

What your agent can do with it

  • Look up IX-API guides, endpoints and schemas, for the version that exchange serves.
  • Read your accounts, ports, connections, network services and their configs.
  • Create, change and cancel resources, where the exchange allows it.

Your credentials

Every call runs as your own IX-API account, with the api key and secret you signed in with. The server keeps them in memory for the length of your session. They are never written to disk and never logged. Nothing is kept beyond the session.

What you need

You need two things, and they come from different places: the address of an IX-API MCP Server, and an IX-API key and secret to sign in with.

The address is what you give your agent. An exchange that runs an IX-API MCP Server publishes its address. To try it without an account at an exchange, use the one the public IX-API sandbox runs:

https://sandbox.ix-api.net/agents/mcp

The key and secret are your IX-API credentials. Your exchange issues them for your account. For the sandbox you create them yourself: open sandbox.ix-api.net and press Create Account under Getting Started. The MCP server never hands out a key or a secret. It asks for yours when you sign in.

For exchange operators

The server is a single container image, configured by environment, and is published under the Apache 2.0 licence at gitlab.com/ix-api/ix-api-mcp .

Sandbox MCP Server

You can try the MCP server with the IX-API Sandbox .

It is a reference implementation of the IX-API that anyone can use, so you need no account at an exchange. Please note: All data is purged once a week, so you might need to create a new account.

Open sandbox.ix-api.net . Under Getting Started, keep the suggested Customer name or type your own, and press Create Account. The page then shows your account, an API key and a secret. Keep the key and the secret at hand: you sign in with them.

Add the MCP server to Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http ix-api https://sandbox.ix-api.net/agents/mcp
claude mcp login ix-api

Getting Started provides a full guide on how to install and use the MCP server.

Documentation MCP server

To look up the IX-API documentation without an exchange account, use the IX-API documentation MCP server. It needs no sign-in. It has the same four documentation tools as the IX-API MCP Server (ixapi_docs_query, ixapi_docs_read, ixapi_docs_list and ixapi_docs_versions), all read-only: search and read the guides, endpoint reference and schemas for each schema version it serves, the latest by default.

To add it to Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http ixapi-docs https://docs.ix-api.net/agents/mcp

Or install the IX-API plugin for Claude Code instead. It includes this server, plus one skill for the documentation and one for calling an IX-API implementation.

/plugin marketplace add https://gitlab.com/ix-api/ix-api-docs-agents.git
/plugin install ixapi@ix-api
